BBL is the English acronym for Brazilian Butt Lift, which literally translates to "Brazilian buttock lift." In medical terms, it's also called gluteoplasty or gluteal fat grafting.
Medically, a BBL is a cosmetic surgery procedure that increases the volume and improves the shape of the buttocks using exclusively the patient's own fat, harvested from areas of the body where it's in excess — abdomen, flanks, lower back, or thighs — and reinjected into the buttocks using precision fat grafting techniques.
It doesn't involve silicone implants. The fat used is 100% biologically compatible because it comes from your own body: no risk of rejection or allergies. The result is a curvier silhouette, fuller and rounder buttocks, and body contouring in the donor areas.
Today, BBL is one of the most requested cosmetic surgery procedures in the world. In the USA alone, over 30,000 procedures are performed annually, with satisfaction rates among the highest in plastic surgery.
The buttock fat grafting technique was developed and made famous by Brazilian plastic surgeons in the 1980s and 1990s. Brazil is historically associated with an aesthetic ideal of round, prominent, and natural-looking buttocks — and Brazilian surgeons were the first to perfect the autologous fat transfer technique in that area.
Today the procedure is universally known as "Brazilian Butt Lift" or BBL, regardless of where it's performed.
BBL uses the patient's own autologous fat (natural, with no rejection risk). Gluteal implants use silicone prosthetics. BBL is considered more natural-looking and feeling; implants may be necessary when there isn't enough fat available in donor areas.
BBL is suitable for adult men and women (age 18+) who wish to improve buttock shape and volume naturally and permanently. The best candidates have:
One of the great advantages of BBL is that fat harvesting through liposuction simultaneously improves donor areas — reducing localized fat and improving your overall body profile.
The most common donor area. The result is a slimmer waist plus fuller buttocks.
Love handles on the back are eliminated and the fat is transferred to the buttocks.
Inner or outer thigh fat can be used as an additional donor area.
Double benefit: BBL is one of the few procedures that improves two body areas simultaneously — reducing fat where you don't want it and adding it where you do.
The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure is divided into three main phases: liposuction (fat harvesting), purification (fat preparation), and fat grafting (reinjection into the buttocks). Here's the complete journey:
The surgeon evaluates your body frame, the amount of fat available in donor areas, and designs a personalized surgical plan. Decisions include: harvest sites, target buttock volume, and desired shape. Blood work, clinical evaluation, and informed consent are completed.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia: you're completely asleep and feel nothing. An experienced anesthesiologist is present throughout the entire procedure, which lasts 2 to 4 hours depending on donor areas and fat volume treated.
The surgeon makes micro-incisions in the agreed-upon areas (abdomen, flanks, lower back, thighs) and harvests fat using thin liposuction cannulas. This phase contours and redefines donor areas, achieving body sculpture results. The harvested fat is collected sterile for the next phase.
The harvested fat is processed through centrifugation according to the Coleman method — the international gold standard for fat grafting. This phase separates viable fat cells from fluids, cellular debris, and impurities, maximizing the graft survival rate of transferred fat.
The purified fat is injected with precision into the buttocks through micro-incisions, in multiple layers and at varying depths (muscle layer and subcutaneous layer). The surgeon shapes the form in real-time, working three-dimensionally to achieve the desired silhouette. Injection only into muscle and subcutaneous zones — never into blood vessels — is the fundamental safety rule.
Micro-incisions are closed. A special compression garment is applied to liposuction areas (not the buttocks — to avoid compressing freshly grafted fat). Hospital stay follows for 1–2 nights under medical monitoring.
After hospital discharge, transfer to our partner hotel with 24-hour on-site medical clinic. An Italian-speaking assistant is always available. Staying in Istanbul for 6–7 nights total ensures optimal medical supervision before your return home.
BBL results are visible immediately after surgery, but volume will appear swollen in the first weeks. Final shape stabilizes in 3–4 months, after swelling is completely reabsorbed and fat has engrafted.
The buttocks appear larger than the final result because of swelling. Don't be alarmed — it's normal. Liposuction areas are also swollen and bruised.
Rest face-down or on your side. Forbidden to sit on buttocks. Compression garment on liposuction areas. Swelling and bruising in donor areas. Buttocks begin to find their shape.
Most patients return home after 7–8 days. Continue following instructions: BBL pillow for sitting, rest predominantly prone or on your side.
Swelling in liposuction areas noticeably reduces. Buttocks lose some initial volume as non-engrafted fat is reabsorbed — normal and expected.
You can resume all activities, including light exercise. You can sit normally. Swelling is almost completely resolved.
Engrafted fat has stabilized. Your buttocks have reached their final shape and size. Liposuction scars are nearly invisible. The result is natural, proportionate, and permanent (for engrafted fat).
Not all transferred fat permanently engrafts. On average, 60–70% of injected fat survives and becomes a permanent part of your body. The remaining 30–40% is reabsorbed by your body in the first few weeks. For this reason, surgeons always inject slightly more volume than desired, anticipating physiological reabsorption.
Engrafted fat behaves exactly like normal body fat: if you gain weight, buttocks increase; if you lose significant weight, they may reduce. Maintaining stable body weight is key to preserving long-term results.
Some patients notice a characteristic odor in the weeks following BBL, particularly in liposuction-treated areas. This phenomenon is caused by the natural healing process: reabsorption of lymphatic fluid, metabolism of fat cells, and the body's normal inflammatory response temporarily produce a particular odor.
It's not a warning sign. It's temporary and completely disappears as wounds heal and swelling reduces — generally within 3–4 weeks. Careful wound hygiene (gentle cleaning with saline solution per surgeon's instructions) is essential for managing this aspect in the post-operative period.
If odor is accompanied by fever, localized redness, increasing pain, or abnormal discharge from incisions, contact your doctor immediately: it could signal an infection requiring prompt treatment.

BBL is an effective but technically complex procedure requiring a surgeon with specific experience. The BBL mortality rate, historically among the highest in cosmetic surgery, has drastically declined in recent years thanks to new international guidelines prohibiting fat injection into deep blood vessels. With certified surgeons and JCI clinics, risk is minimized.
Current ISAPS guidelines (2018) mandate that fat be injected exclusively into buttock subcutaneous tissue and superficial muscles — never into deep blood vessels. This change has drastically reduced fat embolism risk. Choosing a surgeon who follows these guidelines is essential. All partner surgeons operate in compliance with the latest international safety standards.
BBL stands for Brazilian Butt Lift — a cosmetic surgery procedure that increases buttock volume and improves shape using the patient's own fat harvested through liposuction from the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, then reinjected into the buttocks. No silicone implants: results are 100% natural.
Our all-inclusive BBL package starts at €3,000, including surgery, anesthesia, hospital stay, hotel with 24/7 medical care, VIP transfers, medications, compression garments, BBL pillow, and Italian-speaking support. In Western Europe the same procedure (without these services) costs €6,000–12,000. Real savings: 50–65%.
With current ISAPS guidelines (2018), risk has drastically reduced. BBL performed by certified, specialized surgeons in JCI clinics is safe. The key is guideline adherence: fat injected exclusively into subcutaneous and superficial muscle zones, never deep vessels. All partner surgeons maintain these standards.
Complete recovery takes 4–6 weeks. Office work can resume after 7–10 days. Most important rule: don't sit directly on buttocks for at least 6–8 weeks, using the special BBL pillow at all times. This is the most critical success factor.
Engrafted fat (approximately 60–70% of injected fat) is permanent and behaves like normal body fat. Maintaining stable weight preserves results long-term. Significant weight loss can reduce volume; weight gain can increase it. Avoiding major weight fluctuations preserves your results.
Post-BBL odor results from natural healing: lymphatic fluid reabsorption and the body's inflammatory response. It's temporary and disappears within 3–4 weeks. Follow wound-cleaning instructions meticulously. If odor accompanies fever or increasing pain, contact your doctor immediately.
BBL with fat grafting requires sufficient fat in donor areas. Very slim patients or those with low BMI may lack adequate fat. In such cases, the surgeon may recommend gluteal implants as an alternative, or suggest reaching a slightly higher weight before surgery.
The standard BBL program requires 7–8 days in Turkey: 1–2 nights hospital and 5–6 nights in our partner hotel with 24/7 medical care. The longer stay compared to other procedures monitors initial fat engraftment and ensures optimal healing before your flight home.
Yes. BBL is often combined with tummy tuck (for complete 'mommy makeover'), thigh lift, or extended liposuction. Combining procedures requires case-by-case evaluation with your surgeon, considering total anesthesia time and overall surgical load.
One session is usually sufficient. If desired volume wasn't fully achieved or residual asymmetry exists, a second touch-up session can be performed after 3–6 months, once fat has completely stabilized and final results are assessable.
