Root Canal Therapy: What to Expect During Treatment

Root Canal Therapy: What to Expect During Treatment

Root canal therapy often gets a bad reputation, but modern techniques have made the procedure much more comfortable than many people fear. If you're facing root canal treatment, understanding what to expect can help ease your anxiety and prepare you mentally for the procedure. Let's walk through the process step by step.

Why Root Canals Are Necessary

A root canal becomes necessary when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to deep decay, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. Without treatment, the infection can spread and lead to serious complications, including tooth loss and bone damage.

Pre-Treatment Examination

Before beginning the root canal procedure, your dentist will take X-rays to examine the root structure and determine the extent of the infection. Local anesthetic is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding area, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout the treatment. Modern anesthetics are highly effective and work quickly.

The Treatment Process

Once the tooth is numb, the dentist creates an access opening to reach the pulp chamber. Special instruments, called files, are used to carefully remove the infected or inflamed pulp tissue. The root canals are then cleaned, shaped, and disinfected using antimicrobial solutions to eliminate bacteria.

Filling the Root Canals

After cleaning and shaping, the root canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which is a rubber-like substance. An adhesive cement is used to ensure the canals are completely sealed. This prevents future infection and provides structural support for the tooth.

Restoration After Root Canal

After root canal therapy, the tooth typically requires a crown or other restoration to protect it and restore full function. This is an important step because teeth that have undergone root canal treatment are more fragile without this protection.

Recovery and Aftercare

Some sensitivity and discomfort are normal immediately after treatment, but this usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any discomfort. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the permanent restoration is placed.

Success Rates

Modern root canal therapy has a success rate of 95% or higher. With proper care and restoration, a tooth that has had root canal therapy can function normally for many years.
