A back lift in Turkey costs from €3,800 all-inclusive. That is the fixed package price for a bra-line back lift — the operation that removes the roll of loose skin and fat that sits across the upper back and side chest after major weight loss, and hides the resulting scar along the line where a bra strap sits. The price is agreed in writing before you fly, not adjusted once you are in Istanbul. The part that deserves more of your attention than the price is the trade you are making: a back lift swaps loose skin for a long permanent scar. If that trade is worth it to you, the operation is reliable. If it is not, no surgeon can give you the first half without the second.
From €3,800, all-inclusive. A €500 deposit holds your date and the balance is settled in Istanbul. Hotel nights are inside the package; flights never are, in any of our packages. Private clinics in the UK typically quote somewhere in the region of £6,000–9,000 for the same operation, Western Europe roughly €7,000–11,000 and the United States around $8,000–14,000 — and those figures usually exclude the anaesthetist, the facility fee or the compression garment, which are quoted separately. Ask any clinic, here or at home, for one written total that names the surgeon, the anaesthesia and the nights included. A quote that cannot be reduced to a single line is not a quote.
Cost base, not shortcuts. Theatre time, nursing salaries, hospital overheads and hotel nights in Istanbul cost a fraction of what they cost in London or Los Angeles, and a hospital running body-contouring lists every week amortises its fixed costs across far more cases than one doing a handful a month. The sutures, the anaesthetic drugs and the sterile standards are the same products sold everywhere. What that does not mean is that the cheapest quote wins. Quotes far below the range above usually signal an unaccredited day-clinic, no overnight cover, or a surgeon whose specialty is not plastic surgery. Verify the board certification and the hospital before you compare numbers.
An ellipse of skin and the fat directly under it, taken horizontally across the upper back, from roughly one underarm to the other. The surgeon marks the excision so that the closure line falls where a bra band or the seam of a swimsuit top sits. Liposuction is often added at the flanks in the same operation to blend the edges, so the result is a flatter contour rather than a step. It is done under general anaesthetic, usually takes two to three hours, and needs an overnight stay in hospital plus several nights in Istanbul before you fly. What it does not do is remove fat as a weight-loss method, or tighten the lower back and buttocks — that is the territory of a lower body lift.
The strongest candidates are people whose weight has been stable for six to twelve months after major loss, whether from bariatric surgery or their own effort, and whose problem is skin rather than fat. If the roll under your bra strap stays put when you stand tall and cannot be trained away, it is skin, and only excision removes it. Non-smokers heal far better; nicotine constricts the small vessels that feed a long closure and is the single biggest avoidable cause of wound breakdown in this operation. Well-controlled blood pressure and diabetes, a normal haemoglobin and ferritin, and no active infection are the other basic gates.
Wait — or choose something else — if you are still losing weight, if you are less than six months from bariatric surgery, if you smoke and are unwilling to stop for at least four weeks either side, or if what bothers you is bulk rather than loose skin. In that last case liposuction alone, at a lower price and with no long scar, may serve you better, and we will say so. We would rather lose the booking than sell you a scar you did not need.
The scar runs horizontally across the upper back and is long — commonly 30 to 45 centimetres, depending on how much skin is removed. It is permanent. It is red and raised for the first three to six months, fades over twelve to eighteen months to a pale line, and never disappears. Placement under the bra line means it is hidden in a bra, a bikini top and most clothing, and visible in a backless dress or topless. Silicone sheets or gel from around week three, sun protection for a year, and no stretching of the closure in the early weeks all measurably improve how it settles. Some people scar thickly or form keloids regardless of technique, particularly on the back, which is a high-tension area — if you have a history of that, say so at consultation, because it changes the risk conversation.
The consultation and photo assessment, pre-operative blood tests and anaesthetic review, the operation itself with a board-certified partner surgeon at a JCI-accredited partner hospital, the overnight stay, your compression garment, dressings and medication, hotel nights, private airport and hospital transfers, an English- and Italian-speaking coordinator throughout, and post-operative follow-up once you are home. Estetica Istanbul is a medical tourism agency — the surgeons and the hospital are accredited partners we contract with, not staff we employ, and we say so because it is what determines who is accountable for your care. Flights are never included. Optional extras, such as adding liposuction to a further area, are quoted separately rather than folded in.
Night one is spent in hospital with drains in place. Days two to five: drains usually come out, you walk from the first day, and lying flat on your back is uncomfortable — most people sleep on their side. Week one to two: the compression garment is worn day and night; desk work is realistic from around day ten if you can avoid reaching and lifting. Weeks three to four: swelling settles noticeably, driving becomes comfortable, light lower-body exercise resumes. Week six: most people are back to normal activity, including upper-body training, if the closure has healed cleanly. Months three to six: the scar is at its angriest before it starts to fade. Plan roughly seven to ten nights in Istanbul in total, and do not book a flight home before your surgeon has cleared you — a long flight too early raises the risk of a clot.
Post-weight-loss patients rarely have only one area. An arm lift (from €3,400) is the most common pairing, because the incisions sit close together and one recovery covers both. A thigh lift is €3,600 and a tummy tuck €3,700, but combining a back lift with lower-body surgery in a single operation means longer anaesthesia, more blood loss and a harder recovery — most surgeons stage it. A lower body lift, which addresses the abdomen, flanks, outer thighs and buttocks circumferentially, starts at €5,000 and is a separate, bigger undertaking. The right answer is decided on your anatomy and your fitness for a long anaesthetic, not on which combination looks most efficient on a price list.
Wound-healing problems are the most common complication of any long closure on the back, because the area is under constant tension from shoulder movement — a small area of the incision opening and needing dressings for a few weeks is not rare. Seroma, a collection of fluid under the skin, is the next most common and may need drainage in clinic. Beyond that: bleeding, infection, altered sensation around the scar that is usually temporary but occasionally permanent, asymmetry, thickened or keloid scarring, and the general risks of general anaesthesia including deep vein thrombosis. Revision is sometimes needed to refine a dog-ear at either end. None of this is a reason not to have the operation if the indication is right, but a surgeon who does not raise it unprompted is not the one to book.
Two to three hours under general anaesthetic, longer if liposuction of the flanks is added. You stay one night in hospital and typically seven to ten nights in Istanbul before flying home.
It is placed under the bra line, so it is hidden by a bra, a bikini top and ordinary clothing, and visible in a backless dress. It is permanent and fades over twelve to eighteen months rather than disappearing.
Yes, if the problem is genuinely loose skin — ageing and pregnancy can both produce a bra-line roll. If what you have is localised fat with good skin quality, liposuction alone is usually the better and cheaper answer.
The removed skin does not come back. Significant weight gain or further weight loss afterwards will change the result, which is why the six-to-twelve-month weight-stability rule exists. Ageing continues either way.
If you have loose skin across your back after weight loss and want to know whether a back lift is the right operation — or whether liposuction, an arm lift, or simply waiting a few more months makes more sense — send photos for a free assessment and we will come back with a written plan, an honest opinion on whether to operate at all, and a fixed total price with nothing hidden underneath it.
