What breast augmentation for trans women involves

Oestrogen produces breast growth in most trans women, but usually less than an A cup, and on a chest that is wider and flatter than a cisgender woman's with nipples set further apart. Breast augmentation for trans women is therefore planned differently from a standard augmentation: implants tend to be wider-based and higher-profile, placed under the pectoral muscle (dual-plane) to give upper-pole fullness and hide the implant edge where there is little native tissue, and positioned to bring the cleavage together rather than simply add volume.

The operation takes ninety minutes to two hours under general anaesthesia with one night in hospital. Implants are round or anatomical, cohesive silicone gel from Motiva, Mentor or Polytech, and the surgeon chooses size from your chest-wall measurements rather than from a cup-size wish — a too-wide implant on a wide chest is the most common reason for revision in this group.

Who is eligible

WPATH SOC8 requires one mental-health letter and a minimum age of 18. The surgical team asks for at least twelve months of oestrogen therapy before augmentation so that native growth has stabilised and the implant is sized to your final chest, not an interim one. Non-smoker for four weeks before surgery.
