Dental Crowns in Turkey: Premium Restoration & Aesthetic Solutions

Dental crowns represent one of the most effective solutions for restoring damaged, discolored, or weakened teeth. A crown is a full-coverage restoration that covers the entire tooth like a protective cap, providing superior durability and functionality when a simple filling would not provide adequate strength or protection. At Estetica Istanbul, our experienced prosthodontists specialize in creating custom crowns from premium materials that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Whether you need a single crown or a complete smile restoration, our advanced techniques and premium materials ensure exceptional results.

What Are Dental Crowns and When Are They Needed?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that covers and protects a damaged, decayed, or cosmetically flawed tooth. Crowns Turkey have become increasingly popular among international patients seeking high-quality restoration at a fraction of Western costs. Your dentist will recommend a crown if: your tooth has had root canal treatment and the structure is weakened; you have a very large cavity or filling that compromises tooth strength; your tooth has a crack or deep chip affecting more than the outer enamel layer; you have had multiple fillings in the same tooth and it is becoming fragile; the tooth is congenitally small or weak; or the tooth is discolored or misshapen and cannot be adequately restored with a veneer alone.

A crown is more invasive than a veneer because it requires preparing the entire tooth rather than just the front surface. However, a crown provides maximum strength and protection for a compromised tooth and is often the only reliable option when significant structural damage is present.

Crown Materials: EMAX vs. Zirconia vs. PFM

At Estetica Istanbul, we restore damaged teeth using three premium crown materials, each with distinct advantages:

EMAX (Lithium Disilicate) — €255 per tooth
EMAX is a premium ceramic engineered for maximum aesthetic translucency. These crowns mimic the translucency and light-reflecting properties of natural tooth enamel, making them indistinguishable from natural teeth. EMAX is the preferred choice for front teeth where aesthetics are paramount, especially for patients with an ideal bite who do not grind their teeth. The material is custom-made to match your other teeth in shade and shape, and typically lasts ten to fifteen years or more with good care. EMAX crowns are ideal for patients who want the most lifelike result regardless of location in the mouth, and for teeth that have had root canal treatment, large cavities, or significant structural damage requiring full protection.

Monolithic Zirconia — €170–180 per tooth
Zirconia is a single-piece, tooth-colored restoration made entirely from zirconium oxide, a material that is significantly harder and more durable than EMAX or traditional porcelain. The monolithic (one solid piece) construction makes it exceptionally resistant to chipping, cracking, and wear. Zirconia is especially popular for back teeth where strength and longevity outweigh the need for maximum translucency, and for patients who grind their teeth or have a heavy bite. Because the entire crown is one solid piece, there is no layered interface where the restoration can separate or fracture. Zirconia crowns typically last fifteen to twenty years or longer, with many remaining intact for the patient's lifetime. While monolithic Zirconia is slightly less translucent than EMAX, the difference is subtle on front teeth and irrelevant on back teeth.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) — €140–160 per tooth
PFM crowns combine the aesthetic appeal of porcelain with the strength of a metal substructure. These crowns are ideal for patients seeking durability with a natural appearance, making them popular for both front and back teeth restorations. They offer excellent strength and are often the most economical all-purpose option.

Material Comparison & Recommendations

For back teeth (premolars and molars): Choose Zirconia. Back teeth are not visible, so translucency is irrelevant. Zirconia's superior strength and durability make it the optimal choice for the heavy forces back teeth endure. Cost is lower (€170–180 vs. €255), making Zirconia an excellent value for multiple-tooth cases.

For front teeth where aesthetics is the priority: Choose EMAX. Front teeth demand maximum translucency and natural appearance. EMAX delivers the most lifelike result. However, if you grind your teeth, have a heavy bite, or have had previous crowns fail, Zirconia is a wiser choice even for front teeth because its durability will outlast the marginal aesthetic difference.

For bridge work (multi-tooth restoration spanning a missing tooth): Choose Zirconia. Bridges place extreme force on the abutment teeth (the ones supporting the bridge). Zirconia's exceptional strength is essential. A typical three-unit bridge (two abutment crowns plus one artificial tooth) costs €510–540 and lasts fifteen to twenty years or more.

The Crown Treatment Process

Your dental crown treatment at Estetica Istanbul begins with a remote consultation. We discuss your tooth, why it needs a crown, and whether root canal treatment is necessary. On your first in-person visit to Istanbul, we examine the tooth and perform imaging if needed.

Visit 1: Tooth Preparation (45 minutes to 1 hour)

Comprehensive examination and digital imaging

Local anesthesia administration for comfort

If needed, root canal (endodontic) treatment is performed to eliminate the risk of future problems. If your tooth is alive and the pulp (nerve tissue) is healthy, we will preserve that vitality by preparing conservatively and managing the pulp carefully during preparation.

Precise tooth preparation by removing any decay and shaping the tooth to optimal contour for the crown material

Shade selection using professional color-matching techniques to ensure your crown blends perfectly with adjacent teeth

Impression taking with digital or traditional methods

Temporary crown placement made from resin material. The temporary crown protects your prepared tooth, maintains your appearance, and allows you to chew normally whilst the permanent crown is fabricated in our advanced laboratory.

Visit 2: Crown Fitting and Cementation (1–2 hours, 7–10 days later)

Removal of temporary crown

Try-in of permanent crown to verify fit, shade, and bite. We check your bite and appearance in detail under bright light.

Any necessary adjustments for optimal comfort and function

Final cementation with dental-grade, biocompatible, long-lasting adhesive

Bite verification and polishing

Post-treatment care instructions

Recovery and Eating After Crown Placement

Once your permanent crown is cemented, there is no downtime. You can eat normally immediately, though we recommend avoiding very hard foods for the first forty-eight hours whilst the cement fully cures. Most patients feel their new crown is fully integrated and natural within a few days.

Root Canal Treatment: Do You Need It?

Not always. If your tooth is alive and healthy (no previous root canal), we will preserve that vitality by preparing conservatively and managing the pulp carefully. However, if the tooth has significant damage or decay very close to the nerve, or if it has already undergone root canal treatment, we may recommend root canal work first to eliminate the risk of future problems.

Root canal treatment is recommended if: the tooth has already been root-treated (making it non-vital and brittle); decay or trauma has exposed or damaged the pulp; or symptoms of pulp damage are present. If root canal treatment is needed, it is usually performed on the first visit immediately before crown preparation. Some patients prefer to have root canal work done by their home dentist before travelling to Istanbul, in which case we begin with crown preparation when you arrive.

Aftercare and Longevity

Your dental crown can last 10–20 years or longer with proper care. To ensure your crown lasts:

Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush

Floss daily, being gentle around the crown margins

Avoid very hard foods, ice, or sticky candies that might compromise the crown

Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings every six months

Protect your crown with a custom night guard if you grind your teeth

Because the tooth beneath the crown is susceptible to decay at the margins (where the crown meets the gum line), excellent home hygiene and regular professional cleaning are essential to maximize lifespan. If decay develops at the crown margin, it must be addressed promptly. If the underlying tooth ever develops decay or the crown becomes loose or damaged, it can usually be removed and replaced without harming the tooth underneath.

Why International Patients Choose Istanbul for Crown Treatment

A crown in the UK or US typically costs £400–600 or USD 600–900 per tooth — roughly double the cost in Istanbul. Expert Turkish dental technicians are renowned for precision and artistry in crown fabrication. Beyond price, international patients value the streamlined two-visit process, the detailed mock-ups before permanent fitting, the ability to address multiple teeth in a single coordinated trip, and the rapid turnaround. Most crowns are completed within two weeks using premium materials from international suppliers.

Many patients arriving for crown work have delayed treatment because of cost or lengthy waiting lists in their home country. At Estetica Istanbul, we can usually schedule crown treatment within two to four weeks. We take time to explain the reasoning behind each treatment decision, and international patients consistently tell us they appreciate both the quality of the clinical work and the personal attention during their stay.

The two-visit model also reduces anxiety and allows patients needing multiple crowns to bundle the work into a single extended trip. We discuss all options and answer questions thoroughly, offering a collaborative approach where you understand each step of the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns
Q: How long do dental crowns last? A: High-quality crowns typically last 10-20 years depending on materials, oral hygiene, and bite forces. Zirconia crowns often last 15-25 years. Q: Are crowns painful to place? A: No. We use local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Most patients report only mild discomfort during tooth preparation. Q: Can a crowned tooth get a cavity? A: The crown itself cannot decay, but the underlying tooth and margins can develop cavities if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. This is why daily flossing is essential. Q: What's the difference between a crown and a veneer? A: Veneers only cover the front surface of a tooth, while crowns surround the entire tooth. Crowns are used for more severe damage; veneers for cosmetic improvements. Q: How much do crowns cost in Turkey? A: Premium ceramic and zirconia crowns in Turkey typically cost $250-$500, compared to $1,000-$2,000 in the United States. Q: How long does the crown process take? A: Traditional crowns require 2 visits over 1-2 weeks. CEREC same-day crowns can be completed in a single appointment. Q: Can existing crowns be replaced? A: Yes, old crowns can be removed and replaced. The underlying tooth is evaluated to ensure it remains healthy enough for a new crown. Q: Will my crowned tooth look natural? A: Yes. Modern ceramic and zirconia crowns are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth when properly designed and matched to your tooth shade.
