Breast Reduction Recovery Week by Week: Istanbul Trip and Home

Breast reduction recovery follows a six-week arc, with a longer tail for swelling and scars. According to the NHS, most patients stay in hospital for 1 or 2 nights, take 2 to 3 weeks off work, and avoid stretching, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for up to 6 weeks; swelling may last around 3 months. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) describes the same curve: limited activity in week 1, feeling much better in weeks 2–3, a support bra through weeks 4–5 and scar care from week 6. Below is that timeline, mapped onto a trip to Istanbul.

Before you fly: what to arrange

In Istanbul, breast reduction is performed by partner plastic surgeons at partner hospitals licensed for international health tourism. The breast reduction package in Istanbul starts from €3,450 and includes the surgeon fee and hotel nights at Deniz; flights are never included. From Italy, direct flights from Milano MXP or BGY and Roma FCO to Istanbul (IST) take about 3 hours.

Pack front-opening tops, loose clothes you can step into and slip-on shoes, because raising your arms high is uncomfortable in the first days. Your assistant arranges a free video call first, and a video call with the partner surgeon before you book. If you plan to come without a companion, read our notes on travelling alone for surgery in Turkey: having someone with you for the first days makes washing, dressing and getting to the check-up easier.

Days 1–2: hospital and drains

The operation is done under general anaesthesia. The NHS says patients usually stay in hospital for 1 or 2 nights, and that drainage tubes, if used, are typically removed after 1 to 2 days, after which you can usually go home — in your case, to the hotel. Stitches are usually dissolvable, so they do not need to be removed.

Expect some pain for a few days, which the NHS says can be relieved with painkillers. Bleeding inside the breast tissue (haematoma) generally happens within the first 24 hours, which is one reason the first night is spent in hospital under observation. Like any operation, breast reduction carries risks: report sudden swelling on one side, increasing pain, fever or spreading redness to your coordinator straight away.

Week 1: rest in Istanbul

ASPS advice for week 1 is to significantly limit your activity and to monitor pain, swelling and bruising. In practice that means short walks around the hotel and nearby streets, sleeping in the position your surgeon recommends, and no lifting. Gentle walking also keeps your circulation moving; our guide to blood clots and flying after surgery explains why that matters before the flight home.

A support bra or elastic bandage goes on straight after surgery. ASPS says it minimises swelling and supports the breast while it heals. The partner surgeon reviews your wounds at a follow-up appointment in Istanbul before clearing you to travel.

Flying home

No single day count fits every patient: the partner surgeon decides at the final check-up, based on how your wounds look. The general rules on cabin pressure, compression and walking in the aisle are the same as after other breast operations, and we cover them in detail in flying after breast surgery. A 3-hour flight to Milano or Roma is short, but book an aisle seat and ask for help with your suitcase, because heavy lifting stays off-limits for up to 6 weeks.

Weeks 2–3: back to desk work

ASPS says you will start to feel much better in weeks 2–3, and that the return to work depends on your job. The NHS figure is 2 to 3 weeks off work. Desk and remote jobs usually resume at the end of this window; work that involves lifting, caring for patients or small children, or standing all day needs longer and an explicit go-ahead from your surgeon.

Driving waits until wearing a seatbelt no longer hurts, which the NHS says may take several weeks. Keep wearing the support bra if your surgeon asks you to: the NHS notes that some surgeons recommend a sports bra 24 hours a day for up to 3 months after breast surgery.

Weeks 4–5: more movement, still gentle

For weeks 4–5, ASPS advises continuing the support bra, increasing your activity and staying gentle with your breasts. Brisk walking and lower-body exercise are usually reintroduced here once your surgeon agrees. Anything that pulls on the chest — push-ups, swimming strokes, heavy shopping bags, lifting a toddler — still waits.

Week 6 and beyond: exercise, scars and final shape

Because the NHS advises avoiding stretching, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for up to 6 weeks, week 6 is the usual point to discuss the gym and upper-body training with your surgeon. ASPS lists week 6 as the time to talk about scar optimisation and resuming normal activity, and to continue breast self-examination and routine mammograms.

Scars may look red or a different colour from your skin for the first 6 weeks, according to the NHS, and then fade gradually. Swelling may last around 3 months, so your breasts can feel tender, firm or lumpy at first, and you will not see the final shape until the swelling has gone down. ASPS adds that full recovery can take several months.

The timeline at a glance

Days 1–2: hospital stay, drains removed. Week 1: rest, short walks, support bra, surgeon check-up in Istanbul. Weeks 2–3: desk work possible, no driving until the seatbelt is comfortable. Weeks 4–5: more activity, support bra continues. Week 6: discuss exercise and scar care. Month 3: most swelling has settled. If you are still comparing destinations, our breast reduction cost comparison sets the Istanbul price against the UK, the US, Germany and Italy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How painful is breast reduction recovery?

The NHS says you may have some pain for a few days, which can be relieved with painkillers, and the operation itself is done under general anaesthesia. Tell your coordinator if pain increases instead of easing, or if one breast swells suddenly, because that can signal a haematoma or infection the partner surgeon needs to see.

When can I drive after a breast reduction?

The NHS advice is not to drive until wearing a seatbelt is no longer painful, which may take several weeks. Pressure from the belt across the chest and the need to turn the wheel or brake hard are the limiting factors. Check with your surgeon at your follow-up, and confirm with your car insurer that you are covered after surgery.

How long do I need to wear a support bra after breast reduction?

A support bra or elastic bandage goes on straight after surgery, and ASPS advises continuing to wear it through weeks 4–5 of recovery. The NHS notes that some surgeons recommend a sports bra 24 hours a day for up to 3 months after breast surgery. Your partner surgeon gives you the exact schedule and the type of bra to buy.

When will I see the final result of my breast reduction?

Not in the first weeks. The NHS says swelling may last around 3 months and that you will not see what your breasts look like until it has gone down; scars may stay red for the first 6 weeks and then fade gradually. ASPS adds that full recovery can take several months, so judge the shape at month 3 at the earliest.

What does the Istanbul breast reduction price include?

The breast reduction package in Istanbul starts from €3,450. It includes the partner surgeon's fee and hotel nights at Deniz; Antwell and Ibis Zeytinburnu are the other two hotels on offer. Flights are never included. The exact number of nights depends on the surgeon's plan, and your assistant confirms it in your written offer.
