Travelling Alone for Surgery in Istanbul: Yes, You Can — Here Is What to Plan

Yes, you can travel to Istanbul alone for a BBL, tummy tuck or mommy makeover. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) says someone should drive you to and from surgery and stay with you for at least the first night; in Istanbul that first night is covered because you spend it in the partner hospital, under nursing care. The real companion question starts on the day you are discharged to the hotel, and it has a different answer for each procedure.

What the first-night rule says and how it is covered in Istanbul

On its tummy tuck preparation page, the ASPS advises patients having outpatient surgery to arrange for someone to drive them to and from surgery and to stay with them for at least the first night following surgery. The rule exists because general anaesthesia, pain medication and limited mobility make the first hours after surgery the period when you need another person nearby.

In the Estetica packages, that first night is spent in the partner hospital, not in a hotel room. The listed hospital stay is 1 night for a Brazilian butt lift in Istanbul, 2 nights for a tummy tuck and 2 nights for a mommy makeover. Nurses are on the ward during those nights, and transfers between airport, hospital and hotel are part of the package, so nobody has to drive you.

After discharge: what a solo patient needs to plan

Once you move to the hotel, there is no nurse in the next room. The package price includes your nights at the Deniz Hotel (a BBL starts from €4,050), and your assigned assistant stays in contact on WhatsApp and organises the check-up visits. The hotel staff are not carers, however, and the assistant is not with you overnight.

Most solo patients manage the hotel days with a few preparations: a room close to the lift, meals ordered to the room, medication set out for the whole day, and the phone charged and within reach. If you live alone at home, plan the same things there before you fly.

BBL: sitting and sleeping are the hard part

After a BBL, the surgeon will ask you to limit sitting and lying on your buttocks for a period, so you sleep on your front or side and use a BBL pillow when sitting is allowed. Doing that alone is possible, but getting in and out of bed is slower in the first days. Your surgeon sets the positions; the guide to sitting and sleeping after a BBL explains the usual week-by-week pattern.

Tummy tuck and mommy makeover: standing up and reaching

After a tummy tuck, the surgeon will tell you to avoid straining the abdomen, and standing fully upright can feel tight in the first days. A mommy makeover adds breast surgery, which limits reaching and lifting with the arms at the same time. These are the two packages where a companion makes the hotel days noticeably easier, especially for getting out of a low bed or carrying a suitcase.

When a companion is worth the extra cost

Flights are never included in the package, neither yours nor your companion's. Ask your assistant before you book whether your companion can share your Deniz room and what that adds to the price, so the cost is clear in the offer.

Consider bringing someone when you are having a combined operation such as a mommy makeover, when you have young children waiting at home and want help on the journey back, or when you know you get anxious in unfamiliar places.

Flying home alone: the flight and the airport

Direct flights from Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milan Bergamo (BGY) and Rome Fiumicino (FCO) to Istanbul Airport (IST) take about 3 hours. On the way home you will carry a compression garment, medication and your luggage, so book a seat with legroom if you can, and choose an aisle seat so you can walk during the flight. The surgeon decides when you are fit to fly; how long to stay in Istanbul after a BBL covers that decision in detail.

Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006, passengers with reduced mobility are entitled to free assistance at EU airports, and you should request it at least 48 hours before departure, usually through your airline. Asking for wheelchair or luggage assistance after surgery is a normal request, and it means you do not have to lift a heavy case alone.

Travelling alone also means you are the one who has to notice warning signs. Calf pain, swelling in one leg or sudden breathlessness during or after the flight need medical attention without delay; the guide to blood clots and flying after surgery explains the signs and the usual prevention steps.

A checklist for patients travelling alone

Before you book: tell your assistant you are travelling alone, so it is written in your file. Share your medical history and current medication in the form, because no relative will be there to answer questions for you. Ask the surgeon at the €30 video call, which is credited if you book, how long you should plan to stay in Istanbul and what help you will need at the hotel.

Before you fly: pack light, choose a case with four wheels, and bring loose front-opening clothes. Save the hotel address, the assistant's number and the partner hospital's emergency number on your phone. Give a friend or relative at home your flight details and hotel name.

At home: arrange for someone to collect you at the airport where you land, and to check on you for the first evening. Your follow-up continues by video call with the assistant after you return.

The short answer

Travelling alone is workable for a BBL, tummy tuck or mommy makeover in Istanbul. The first night is covered by the hospital stay: 1 night for a BBL, 2 nights for a tummy tuck or mommy makeover. A companion helps most after combined procedures and for the flight home. Whatever you choose, tell your assistant before booking so the transfers, room and check-ups are planned around you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a BBL in Istanbul if I live alone at home?

Yes. Before you fly, prepare your home as you would the hotel room: medication set out, easy meals, the phone within reach and a BBL pillow ready for when sitting is allowed. Ask a friend or relative to collect you at the airport and check on you the first evening home. Your assistant continues follow-up by video call after you return, and the surgeon decides when you are fit to fly.

Does the assistant stay with me at the hotel after surgery?

No. Your assigned assistant stays in contact on WhatsApp, organises transfers and the check-up visits, and can be reached if something worries you, but does not stay with you overnight. Hotel staff are not carers. The first night after surgery is spent in the partner hospital with nurses on the ward: 1 night for a BBL, 2 nights for a tummy tuck or mommy makeover.

Is the flight for a companion included in the package?

No. Flights are never included, neither yours nor your companion's. The package price covers the surgeon, the hospital stay, transfers and your nights at the Deniz Hotel; a BBL starts from €4,050. Ask your assistant before booking whether a companion can share your room and what that adds to the price, so it is written clearly in your offer.

Can I ask for wheelchair assistance at the airport after surgery?

Yes. Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006, passengers with reduced mobility are entitled to free assistance at EU airports, and you should request it at least 48 hours before departure, usually through your airline. Asking for wheelchair or luggage help after surgery is a normal request and means you do not lift a heavy case alone on the way home.

What should I tell the surgeon if I am travelling alone?

Say it at the €30 surgeon video call, which is credited if you book. Ask how long you should stay in Istanbul, what you will be able to do alone at the hotel, and whether your procedure, for example a combined mommy makeover, makes a companion advisable. Also give your full medical history and medication in the form, because no relative will be there to answer for you.
