The Whitening Procedure

What to Expect After Whitening

Your teeth will be noticeably whiter immediately. Colour continues to improve slightly over the next 24 to 48 hours as teeth rehydrate. Some patients experience mild sensitivity to cold for 24 to 48 hours, which resolves on its own.

• Avoid staining foods and drinks for 48 hours (coffee, red wine, tea, berries, soy sauce)
• No smoking or tobacco for at least 48 hours

Decide what you want whitening to change

Start with the reason you are considering treatment. Do you want a brighter natural smile, a colour change before other dental work, or help with a tooth that looks different from the rest? Describe your goal before choosing a product or technique. Ask the dentist what can realistically change and what may need a different assessment.

The American Dental Association's whitening information explains that bleaching affects natural teeth while existing tooth-coloured restorations do not change colour. If you already have crowns, veneers or bonding, ask how a change in the surrounding teeth might affect the overall appearance.

Check suitability before booking a session

Tell the dentist about sensitivity, existing dental work and any symptoms that concern you. Ask whether an examination is needed before treatment and whether another issue should be addressed first.

Do not assume a promise of a certain number of lighter shades applies to every smile. Request a discussion of your starting colour and the expected limits. The point is a result you understand, not a number selected from an advertisement.

Compare methods through practical questions

Ask which method is proposed, who carries it out, how your teeth and gums are assessed, and whether take-home components are part of the agreement. A label such as “laser” does not answer those questions.

If you are also considering restorations, discuss the sequence before starting. Ask how the dentist will select the colour of later work and whether a waiting period is needed between stages.

Know what to expect after treatment

Ask for personalised aftercare instructions, including what to do if you experience sensitivity or discomfort. The NHS whitening page describes sensitivity and gum irritation as possible effects. It does not establish an identical recovery period for every person.

Ask when the dentist wants to assess the result and whether any additional session is included or charged separately. Avoid treating the immediate appearance as a permanent colour guarantee.

Make whitening part of a proportionate plan

If you are visiting Istanbul only for whitening, compare the full trip cost with options nearer home. If you are already travelling for dental care, ask whether whitening serves a clear purpose in that plan. A smaller intervention can be worth considering, but it should still be chosen on clinical advice.

Will whitening change the colour of my crowns?

Existing restorations do not bleach like natural teeth. Discuss how the combination will look before treatment.

Can you promise a particular shade?

Request an individual assessment and explanation of the likely limits. A predetermined shade is not a result guarantee.

What should the quote identify?

The proposed method, number of sessions, any take-home items and arrangements for a concern afterwards. Flights are not included in Estetica Istanbul's treatment packages.

Ask why a single tooth looks different

If one tooth has changed colour, especially after injury or previous treatment, explain that history rather than asking only for a general whitening session. Ask whether it needs a separate assessment and whether the proposed method can address the cause. A photograph can start the conversation but does not establish the health of that tooth.

If surface staining is the main concern, ask whether cleaning or a different approach is relevant before bleaching. If you prefer to keep the existing colour, no cosmetic treatment is also a choice. The dentist should explain what each option can change without promising a particular number of shades.

Decide how you will handle a colour mismatch

Use the NHS whitening guidance to discuss suitability and colour planning. Show the dentist visible crowns, fillings and other restorations. Ask how these and the health of your teeth and gums affect the proposed treatment and any possible colour mismatch.

Ask whether leaving a mismatch, limiting whitening or considering later restorative work is reasonable. Replacing a sound restoration has its own clinical and financial trade-offs; it should not be an assumed step after whitening. Ask for a separate recommendation before committing to more treatment.

Get a plan for sensitivity rather than repeating treatment

Explain existing sensitivity and ask how it changes the recommendation. Request instructions on what to do if discomfort occurs during treatment or after you leave, including when to stop using any take-home product and seek advice. Do not repeat sessions or increase product use to chase a promised shade.

Ask who assesses the result and whether a further session is appropriate before discussing its price. Ask which product and method the partner will use, what result is realistic and how long any effect may last.

Does from €230 include accommodation or every follow-up session?

As of 8 October 2026, the published price list lists laser teeth whitening from €230 with no hotel included. Ask the written quote to specify the actual method, number of sessions, any take-home components and charges for additional care. Flights and accommodation need separate budgeting. Ask the provider to identify the actual equipment and method rather than relying on a treatment label.
