Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat to reshape the body — not to produce weight loss. It is a body-sculpting operation, designed for areas where diet and exercise have already delivered everything they can: abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, back and under the chin.

Modern liposuction is a very different operation from the blunt, traumatic version of the 1990s. Today we use precise techniques, frequently ultrasound- or laser-assisted, that selectively emulsify fat before removal: more uniform results, less trauma, faster recovery. "Liposuction" as talked about online isn't one thing — different techniques serve different goals.

Who liposuction is suitable for

Liposuction works best for patients close to their target weight, with good skin elasticity, who want to address specific stubborn areas.

The ideal candidate is close to their target weight — typically within fifteen per cent of a BMI of 25. Good skin elasticity matters: the skin needs to retract over the new profile without residual folds. The targets are localised fat deposits that have resisted diet and exercise. Patients in good general health and non-smokers at the time of surgery.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss operation. If you are significantly overweight, the clinically correct path is bariatric surgery first, then body contouring. A serious clinic tells you this at the first consultation — a clinic selling you "liposuction for 20kg of weight loss" is lying.

For post-weight-loss patients (including the growing group who have lost significant weight on GLP-1 weight-loss medication): liposuction alone rarely addresses what you need. Usually you need tummy tuck or body lift to deal with loose skin, with or without targeted liposuction. We discuss this honestly at consultation.

The techniques we use

The fluid phase, at the base of every modern liposuction

Every contemporary liposuction, regardless of technology, starts with a "tumescent" or "super-wet" infiltration: significant volumes of dilute local anaesthetic and adrenaline that numb the area, constrict blood vessels and "swell" the fat to make it easier to remove. This is the step that dramatically reduced haematomas and blood loss compared to the older technique. Invisible to the patient, fundamental to the result.

VASER liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction. Sound waves selectively emulsify fat before aspiration, sparing blood vessels and connective tissue. Result: fewer haematomas, more precise contouring, better skin retraction compared to traditional liposuction. It is our default technique in most cases.

Laser-assisted liposuction

Heat from a laser fibre liquefies fat and stimulates mild skin retraction. Useful for smaller, more superficial areas and for patients where light skin tightening helps the result.

Hi-Def / 4D liposuction

High-definition sculpting that emphasises underlying muscle architecture — abs, pecs, obliques. This is an advanced technique that requires an experienced operator and specific body conditions. Results can be striking, but the approach must be disciplined — it is not a technique "for everyone".

Classic tumescent liposuction

The workhorse. Still the right technique for high-volume cases, for the back, and for areas where energy-based technologies add little to the result.

Most-requested areas

Abdomen and flanks ("love handles") — the most requested area and often the most satisfying. Thighs — inner, outer ("saddlebags") and anterior. Arms — particularly the posterior upper arm. Back and bra-roll. Submental and jawline — to redefine the oval of the face. Calves and ankles — the most technically demanding area, requiring advanced experience. Lipo 360 — circumferential contouring of the entire waist in a single session, frequently combined with BBL for a complete body-reshaping result.

The surgery, step by step

Liposuction is performed under general anaesthesia in a JCI-accredited hospital, with a dedicated anaesthesiologist present throughout. Duration depends on the number of areas treated — typically two to four hours for standard cases, longer for Lipo 360 or combined procedures. One overnight stay in hospital is standard.

The tumescent fluid is infiltrated into the area — it contains dilute local anaesthetic and adrenaline, which minimise bleeding and bruising. The surgeon then uses the chosen technique (VASER, laser or classic) to emulsify and remove fat through small strategically-placed access points.

Recovery

Weeks 1–2

Compression garment worn 24 hours a day for two to four weeks, depending on the areas treated. Soreness is moderate — for most patients more like post-workout muscle ache than real pain. Manual lymphatic drainage from day three accelerates recovery and improves the final result.

Weeks 3–4

Bruising largely reabsorbed. Swelling decreasing but still present. Light physical activity resumes. Most patients return to desk work in 5–7 days and to full social life within week two.

Months 1–3

Swelling continues to reabsorb. Final shape begins to emerge. The compression garment can be reduced to night wear only.

Months 3–6

Final result. Skin retraction — if it was going to happen — is largely complete by this point.

Risks and realistic expectations

Honest risks: contour irregularities, asymmetry, seroma (fluid collection), and in very slim patients residual skin laxity if retraction is incomplete. Significant weight gain after surgery will distort the result, because remaining fat cells will expand disproportionately in the untreated areas.

Liposuction does not replace a tummy tuck when there is excess skin. If the skin won't retract, liposuction isn't enough: you need a tummy tuck, or a combined lipo + tummy tuck. Define an area before comparing liposuction prices

“One area” can sound clear until two providers use it differently. Ask what the proposed area includes and have it identified on a diagram or annotated photograph. Does “abdomen” include the upper and lower abdomen? Are the flanks separate? Does the quote include both sides? These questions help you compare the scope of treatment rather than a headline number that may describe a different plan.

As of October 2026, Estetica Istanbul's liposuction starting price is €2,450 all-inclusive, flights excluded. The catalogue describes VASER liposuction of one area with five package nights. It is not a published price for Lipo 360 or high-definition treatment across multiple areas. Ask for a separate written quote if the proposed plan goes beyond that entry.

Explain the outline you want, rather than a number of litres

A useful consultation starts with proportions. Tell the surgeon what bothers you when you view your body from the front, side and back. Perhaps the waist is your priority, or one area looks out of balance with the rest. Ask what can change and what is likely to remain. A requested quantity of removed fat is not a substitute for a plan that fits your anatomy.

Bring everyday examples: a waistband that feels uneven, a jacket that catches over the upper arms, or a contour visible through fitted clothing. The surgeon can translate those concerns into an assessment. Avoid treating a photograph of another person as a specification. Ask how your height, build, starting contour and skin affect the proposed plan.

Separate fat, skin texture and skin excess

The distinction matters most when a photograph shows several concerns together. Localised fat, a fold of loose skin and cellulite are different issues. The ASPS patient guide notes that liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite and that skin quality influences the result. A smoother overall outline should not be confused with a promise of perfectly smooth skin.

Ask the surgeon to address each concern explicitly. If removing fat may leave an unresolved skin problem, ask about alternatives, their scars and their recovery requirements. If you would prefer to avoid an additional operation, say so: understanding what liposuction alone cannot do is part of informed consent. Compare technique claims without buying a machine name

VASER, laser-assisted and high-definition labels are not complete treatment plans. Request the exact technique proposed, which areas it will be used on, and why it is appropriate for you. If a provider claims that a device guarantees skin tightening, ask for evidence and the limitation of that claim. Do not infer that a more expensive technology eliminates the ordinary risks of surgery.

The questions should reach beyond equipment: who performs the operation, how the contour is planned, where treatment takes place and what follow-up is arranged. If the plan changes after an in-person examination, ask for the revised explanation and price before consenting. You should understand the actual proposal, even if you initially enquired about a technique you saw online.

Keep the extras and aftercare instructions separate

A garment, massage session and follow-up appointment are different items. Ask which garment is included, whether a replacement is supplied, and who explains its use. Ask the clinician about the required fit and schedule rather than buying the tightest garment available.

Optional massage or drainage is not automatically part of the surgical price. The listed add-on prices are €100 for one session or €250 for three. Whether a session is suitable and when it should occur are clinical questions. Avoid adding treatments because another patient recommended them. Ask what to do if the garment becomes uncomfortable, where to send a concern, and what contact route is available outside scheduled reviews.

Plan ordinary life around the areas treated

Write down the activities that matter to you: a desk commute, lifting at work, long drives, caring for children, exercise and travel. Ask for guidance that matches the specific areas treated. An answer about abdominal liposuction should not be assumed to apply to arms, thighs or several areas together.

Bring loose clothing and make a plan for handling your suitcase. Record instructions in a format you can use at home, including who to contact if you are worried. No such inclusion should be assumed. Ask for the named areas and a personalised price for the full plan.

Will liposuction remove cellulite?

Liposuction is not an effective cellulite treatment according to ASPS. Discuss texture concerns separately from contour goals.

Should I book drainage before the operation?

Ask for the clinician's recommendation first. It is an optional paid service, and the appropriate timing must be confirmed for your case.
