Breast Lift Recovery Week by Week: What to Expect After Surgery in Istanbul

Most people recover from a breast lift (mastopexy) in stages: the chest feels stiff and sore for 2–5 days, desk work is usually possible after 1–2 weeks, heavy lifting stays off-limits for 4–6 weeks, and the breasts settle into their final shape at about 6 months. Scars keep fading for up to two years. The timeline below cites The Aesthetic Society (the US society of board-certified aesthetic plastic surgeons) and the patient guide of Nuffield Health, a UK hospital group. Your own surgeon's instructions always come first, because recovery varies from person to person.

Days 1–5: soreness, drains and sleeping on your back

A breast lift is done under general anaesthesia. Nuffield Health says morning operations often allow same-day discharge, later ones may need an overnight stay, and someone should stay with you for the first 24 hours. The Aesthetic Society describes the chest as stiff and sore for two to five days, with movement getting easier after several days.

If your surgeon placed drains, The Aesthetic Society notes they usually come out a few days after surgery. You will wear a surgical bra or compression garment from day one. Sleep on your back with your upper body raised at a 25–45 degree angle during the first days or while swelling is significant, again per The Aesthetic Society. Short walks around the hotel room are encouraged from the start; lying still for long periods is not.

Week 1: stitch checks and the first follow-up

According to The Aesthetic Society, stitches are removed in stages over roughly three weeks, starting about one week after surgery. Nuffield Health says dressings stay on for about 2 weeks. This is why the first week is the one you spend close to your surgeon: the check-up at around day 7 is when wound healing, drain sites and bra fit are reviewed.

Expect bruising, swelling and tightness. The Aesthetic Society says some residual effects can last up to three months. Pain relief is prescribed by the surgeon; take it on schedule rather than waiting for pain to build.

Week 2: back to a desk job, but no lifting or driving yet

The Aesthetic Society puts a return to work at about a week, depending on the job, and Nuffield Health at 1–2 weeks, with more time off for physically demanding work. For the first two weeks The Aesthetic Society advises no lifting, no driving, no laundry and no cleaning. Nuffield Health suggests waiting 1–3 weeks to drive, until you can wear a seatbelt comfortably and control the car without pain.

Parents of small children should plan help for these two weeks: picking up a toddler counts as lifting. The same planning applies after other breast operations, as our breast reduction recovery timeline shows for a closely related procedure.

Weeks 3–4: gentle exercise and the support bra

Nuffield Health says gentle exercise can usually restart at about 4 weeks, while light walking continues throughout. Once the surgical bra comes off, Nuffield Health advises a soft support bra day and night for about 4 weeks; after that it can come off at night but stays on during the day. Underwired bras usually wait until your surgeon clears them.

By now most of the visible bruising has gone. The incisions stay pink or red for many months, which The Aesthetic Society describes as normal.

Weeks 4–6: heavy lifting and full workouts

Nuffield Health advises avoiding heavy lifting for at least 4–6 weeks and keeping strenuous, high-impact exercise such as running or chest workouts until 4–6 weeks or until your surgeon clears you. The Aesthetic Society adds that you should be gentle with your breasts for at least a month. Swimming normally waits until every incision has fully closed.

Month 3 to year 2: swelling, shape and scars

The Aesthetic Society says some residual swelling can last up to three months. Nuffield Health says the breasts can take up to 6 months to reach their final shape, and that scars begin to soften at 6–9 months but can take up to two years to fade. Judge the result at 6 months, not in the first weeks.

How the timeline fits a trip to Istanbul

The first week is the one that matters for travel planning, because it holds the drain removal, the dressing check and the first follow-up. Flights from Milano (MXP or BGY) or Roma (FCO) to Istanbul take about 3 hours. Flights are never included in the package, so book them only after the surgery date is confirmed.

Before you book the return, read our guide on flying home after breast surgery and the separate guide to blood clot risk on flights. On the plane, walk the aisle, drink water and wear the bra your surgeon prescribed; the return flight date is set by the operating surgeon at the final check-up.

A breast lift in Istanbul through Estetica starts from €3,400, a package covering the partner surgeon's fee and the hotel nights at Deniz Hotel. Operations take place at partner hospitals licensed for international health tourism by the Turkish Ministry of Health. If you want to compare that price with the UK, Italy, Germany and the US, see our breast lift cost comparison.

Planning the first step

Start with a free video call with your Estetica assistant to go through your photos and dates. After the offer, a €30 video call with the surgeon is the first paid step, and the €30 is credited if you book. A €500 deposit secures the date; it is refunded if you cancel at least 14 days before surgery and before your flight is booked, otherwise it becomes a 12-month credit.

A breast lift is low-risk but not risk-free. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, poor wound healing and changes in nipple sensation, which is why the week-one check and your surgeon's own aftercare instructions matter more than any general timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How painful is breast lift recovery?

The Aesthetic Society describes the chest as stiff and sore for two to five days after a breast lift, with movement getting easier after several days. Pain is controlled with medication prescribed by your surgeon; take it on schedule during the first days. Tell your surgeon at once about pain that gets worse instead of better, one-sided swelling or fever, because these need a check.

When can I sleep on my side after a breast lift?

For the first days, and while swelling is significant, The Aesthetic Society advises sleeping on your back with your upper body raised at 25–45 degrees. Ask your surgeon at a follow-up when side sleeping is allowed for you. Wear your support bra at night for about 4 weeks, as Nuffield Health advises, and avoid sleeping on your stomach until cleared.

When can I wear an underwire bra after a breast lift?

Nuffield Health advises a soft support bra day and night for about 4 weeks after the surgical bra comes off, then during the day only. Underwire bras press on the fold where the lower incision sits, so most surgeons ask you to wait until that incision has fully healed and they have cleared you at a follow-up. Ask your surgeon for a date rather than guessing.

Can I combine a breast lift with implants and is recovery longer?

Yes, a breast lift is often combined with implants in one operation when the patient wants more volume as well as a higher position. Your surgeon will tell you whether the implants change any of the limits on lifting, exercise or bra wear described in this timeline. Your surgeon decides whether one combined operation or two separate stages is safer for you.

How much time off work do I need after a breast lift?

The Aesthetic Society puts the return to work at about a week, and Nuffield Health at 1–2 weeks, for desk jobs. Jobs that involve lifting, carrying or physical strain need longer, because heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks. If you travel to Istanbul for surgery, count your days in the city and the flight home within that time off.
