You can usually fly home after eyelid surgery once your stitches are out and your surgeon has checked the incisions, which in most cases happens within 7 days. Nuffield Health, a UK hospital group, says stitches come out towards the end of the first week, and The Aesthetic Society puts removal at 2 to 7 days after surgery. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust allows a wider window of 7 to 14 days. The flight itself is rarely the problem. The problem is leaving before anyone has looked at your eyelids.
Why the stitch check sets your flight date
None of the three sources above gives a fixed flying day for blepharoplasty. Nuffield Health and The Aesthetic Society both place the stitch check in the first week; Guy's and St Thomas' allows up to 14 days, so confirm your day with the surgeon. At that check the surgeon removes non-dissolvable stitches, looks for bleeding or infection, and confirms that the eyelids close properly. Book your return flight for after that appointment, not before it. If the surgeon uses dissolvable stitches, the check still happens; it simply takes less time.

Upper and lower eyelids heal on different schedules, and the blepharoplasty recovery timeline shows what each stage looks like. Lower-lid surgery can take longer to settle, so ask your surgeon whether your check day moves if both lids are treated.
What cabin air does to healing eyelids
None of these sources lists cabin pressure as a risk to eyelid incisions. Two things on board do matter. Cabin air is very dry, and Guy's and St Thomas' notes that vision may be blurred for a few days after surgery, so eyes that already feel tired will feel worse on a plane. Bending forward to reach a bag under the seat raises pressure in the face, and The Aesthetic Society advises avoiding bending over and strenuous activity for about 10 days after surgery.
Practical fixes are simple: carry the lubricating drops or ointment your surgeon prescribed in your hand luggage, put your bag in the overhead locker or ask cabin crew for help, and keep sunglasses on. The Aesthetic Society recommends dark sunglasses outdoors for the first few weeks.
Flight times from Italy and the rest of Europe
From Milano Malpensa (MXP), Milano Bergamo (BGY) or Roma Fiumicino (FCO), a direct flight to Istanbul Airport (IST) takes about 3 hours. Most Western European capitals are 3 to 4 hours away. A short flight lowers the clot risk compared with a long-haul trip, but it does not remove it, so the usual measures still apply: walk the aisle when the seatbelt sign is off, drink water, and flex your ankles. Our guide to blood clots when flying after surgery covers who needs compression stockings or more.
Bruising, contact lenses and going back to work
Nuffield Health says bruising typically lasts a few weeks and swelling can take up to 6 months to go completely. Most of the visible change happens much earlier: The Aesthetic Society describes dark circles and swelling lasting from a few days up to a week, and overall recovery of 10 to 14 days. Many patients fly home with sunglasses on and some yellow bruising still visible.
Do not wear contact lenses on the flight. The Aesthetic Society advises avoiding them for about a week, and Nuffield Health says most people can wear them again within 2 weeks. Bring your glasses. Nuffield Health also notes that people with desk jobs may be able to return to work during the first week, so a Monday back at the office after a weekend flight is realistic for many patients.
Exercise, swimming and the beach
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust advises no strenuous activity, including swimming, for 2 weeks. Nuffield Health says walking can restart within 48 hours, while running, cycling and contact sports need at least 4 to 6 weeks and your surgeon's all-clear. If you planned to add a few beach days in Türkiye after surgery, keep them out of the pool and the sea for those first 2 weeks.
Combining eyelid surgery with a facelift or brow lift
Eyelid surgery is often done in the same operation as a brow lift or facelift. The combination changes your flight date: a facelift carries a longer swelling phase and its own drain and dressing checks. If you are considering both, read how a facelift and eyelid surgery in the same trip plays out week by week before booking flights. As a price reference, a facelift with our partner surgeons starts from €3,750 and a brow lift from €3,550.
Warning signs: do not board, call first
Guy's and St Thomas' tells patients to go to an eye department or emergency department immediately if the eye becomes more painful, vision gets worse, the eye becomes redder, or there is excess discharge. Add sudden swelling or bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure. Any of these before your flight means you stay and contact the coordinator and the surgeon the same day. Eyelid surgery is not risk-free, and a missed flight costs far less than a complication handled at 10,000 metres.
What the Istanbul package covers
Eyelid surgery in Istanbul through Estetica starts from €2,190. That package price covers the partner surgeon's fee and hotel nights at the Deniz hotel, with an upgrade to Antwell available at €110 per night. Flights are never included, so book them yourself once the surgeon has confirmed your stitch-check day. The first step is a free video call with your assistant; after you receive your offer, a €30 video call with the surgeon is credited against the price if you book.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fly the day after eyelid surgery?
It is not advisable. The first-week check, when the surgeon removes non-dissolvable stitches and looks for bleeding or infection, usually happens within 7 days, and you should still be in Istanbul for it. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust also says not to drive for 24 hours after surgery, which gives a sense of how unsettled the first day is. Plan your return flight after the stitch check.
Can I wear makeup on the flight home after blepharoplasty?
Avoid eye makeup near the incisions until your surgeon says the wounds have closed, which is assessed at the stitch check, usually in the first week. Many patients cover the remaining bruising with large sunglasses instead. The Aesthetic Society recommends dark sunglasses outdoors for the first few weeks, and they also help with glare and dry eyes on the plane.
Should I sit by the window or the aisle after eyelid surgery?
An aisle seat makes it easier to stand up and walk, which helps reduce clot risk, and you can ask cabin crew to lift your bag into the overhead locker so you do not bend forward. The Aesthetic Society advises avoiding bending over for about 10 days after surgery. Keep your eye drops and glasses in a small bag at your seat.
Is it safe to fly with dissolvable stitches after eyelid surgery?
Dissolvable stitches do not change the cabin-pressure picture, and Guy's and St Thomas' says they fall out by themselves within a few weeks. What still matters is the surgeon's check, usually in the first week, because it confirms the eyelids close properly and there is no bleeding or infection. Book your flight after that appointment, even if no stitches need removing.
How long should I stay in Istanbul after lower eyelid surgery?
Plan your stay around the first-week check rather than a fixed number of nights. Lower-lid surgery can take longer to settle, and The Aesthetic Society describes swelling and dark circles lasting from a few days up to a week. Ask the partner surgeon on your €30 video call which day your check falls on, then book the return flight for after it.
