After a mommy makeover, surgical drains usually come out between day 3 and day 14, once each drain collects less than 30 ml in 24 hours for 2 days in a row, and the compression garment stays on 24/7 for 6 weeks. The removal window comes from The Aesthetic Society; the 30 ml rule and the six-week garment schedule come from Michigan Medicine's abdominoplasty aftercare guide. A mommy makeover combines a tummy tuck with breast surgery and usually liposuction, so these abdominal rules set the pace of your whole recovery. Your partner surgeon in Istanbul gives the final protocol; this guide shows what each week usually looks like.
Why drains and a garment after a mommy makeover
A tummy tuck lifts a large flap of skin and fat off the abdominal wall. Fluid can collect in that space, and drains are thin tubes that carry it out into a small bulb while the tissues stick back together. The compression garment presses the flap down from the outside and controls swelling in the liposuction areas. The breasts are supported separately, usually with a surgical bra chosen by the surgeon.

Not every surgeon uses drains. Some close the space with internal sutures and place no tubes at all. Ask about this on the video call before you book, because it changes how many days you may need near the surgeon.
Days 1 to 3: drains in, garment on, walking from day one
You wake up with the garment already on and, if your surgeon uses them, one or two drains coming out near the lower incision. The Aesthetic Society encourages walking from the day after surgery, and Michigan Medicine tells patients to start walking as soon as possible. Short walks in the hotel corridor are enough at this stage.
Michigan Medicine also advises sleeping with the head slightly raised and pillows under the knees to reduce tension on the incision. The nurse at the partner hospital shows you how to empty the bulbs and write down the volume each time, with the date and hour. That log is what the surgeon uses to decide when each drain comes out.
Days 4 to 14: the drain log decides
Most of your stay in Istanbul falls in this window. Michigan Medicine schedules drain removal once output is under 30 ml in 24 hours for two consecutive days, and The Aesthetic Society says surgeons typically remove drains three to fourteen days after surgery, depending on how much fluid is still coming out.
Showering is limited while drains are in. Michigan Medicine allows a shower 48 hours after the drainage tubes come out, and no bath soaking while drains are in place or for six to eight weeks after surgery. The garment comes off only for that shower and goes straight back on.
The flight home is planned around this check. The UK Civil Aviation Authority advises against flying for 10 days after abdominal surgery, so plan the flight no earlier than 10 days after surgery, and only after the partner surgeon has seen you in person. Our guide to flying home after a mommy makeover covers the flight itself, including Milano Malpensa, Bergamo and Roma Fiumicino routes of about three hours.
Weeks 2 to 4: garment 24/7, drains usually out
By the end of week two most patients no longer have drains, but the garment rule does not change: Michigan Medicine asks for 24/7 wear for six weeks. Pack two garments of the same size so one can be washed while you wear the other. Wrinkles that dig into the skin, a garment that rolls at the waist, or new numbness or colour change in the legs are reasons to message the surgeon the same day.
Swelling that suddenly increases on one side, a fluid wave you can feel under the skin, fever, or redness around an incision can signal a seroma or infection after the drains are out. Send photos through your assistant at once; the partner surgeon reviews them and tells you whether you need to be seen. Our article on what to do about complications after surgery abroad explains who treats you at home.
The Aesthetic Society suggests about two weeks off work for a tummy tuck, depending on how physical the job is, while Michigan Medicine plans six to eight weeks. A desk job often returns sooner than a job with lifting. Michigan Medicine adds that driving usually waits until about four weeks, once you have full range of motion in your arms.
Weeks 5 to 6: the last garment weeks and the lifting limit
The six-week mark is the main milestone. Until then Michigan Medicine limits lifting to 5 pounds, about 2.3 kg, which rules out toddlers, car seats and shopping bags. Parents of young children can plan that in detail with our week-by-week recovery plan with young children.
At six weeks, ask the partner surgeon, through your assistant, whether the garment can come off or should continue part-time. The Aesthetic Society gives no fixed duration and says only that the garment is worn for several weeks, so follow the surgeon's instruction rather than the calendar.
Weeks 7 to 8 and beyond: back to exercise
The Aesthetic Society advises avoiding strenuous exercise for four to six weeks, and Michigan Medicine restricts strenuous activity for eight weeks after an abdominoplasty.
Recovery continues long after the garment comes off. The Aesthetic Society describes tummy tuck recovery as taking six months or more, with scars fading over three months to two years.
What to pack and plan before you fly to Istanbul
Bring loose clothes that zip or button at the front, a notebook or phone note for the drain log, and slip-on shoes, because bending to tie laces is hard in the first week. Ask the partner surgeon before the trip whether drains are planned and which garment model you will receive, so you can order a spare.
The mommy makeover package in Istanbul starts at €5,520, including the partner surgeon and hotel nights at the Deniz hotel; flights are not included. The free video call with your assistant and the €30 surgeon video call, credited if you book, are the right moments to ask how the drain and garment plan will work for your specific operation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are drains removed after a mommy makeover?
The partner surgeon or a nurse removes each drain at a follow-up visit, once your log shows the output is low enough. Michigan Medicine schedules removal when a drain collects less than 30 ml in 24 hours for two consecutive days, and The Aesthetic Society says drains typically come out three to fourteen days after surgery. Michigan Medicine allows a shower 48 hours after the tubes come out.
Can I fly home with drains still in after a mommy makeover?
The partner surgeon decides, after checking you in person. Most patients are planned so the drains are out before departure: drains usually come out between day 3 and day 14, and the UK Civil Aviation Authority advises against flying for 10 days after abdominal surgery. If a drain must stay in, the surgeon explains how to empty and log it during the trip.
What happens if I stop wearing the compression garment too early?
Stopping early means less control of swelling over the tummy tuck and liposuction areas. In an article for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Kim notes that patients who skip the garment have more swelling and more discomfort. Michigan Medicine asks for 24/7 wear for six weeks, so ask the partner surgeon before taking it off for longer than a shower.
Do I sleep in the compression garment after a mommy makeover?
Yes. Michigan Medicine asks abdominoplasty patients to wear the garment 24 hours a day for six weeks, and that includes nights. It comes off only to shower. Michigan Medicine also advises sleeping with the head slightly raised and pillows under the knees, which reduces tension on the lower abdominal incision during the first weeks.
How do I measure and record drain output?
Empty each bulb into the measuring cup you are given, note the volume in millilitres with the date and time, then squeeze the bulb flat and close it to restore suction. Add up each drain separately over 24 hours. Michigan Medicine schedules removal once a drain collects less than 30 ml in 24 hours for two consecutive days.
