Mommy Makeover Recovery With Young Children: Week by Week, No Lifting for Six Weeks

After a mommy makeover you should not lift your children for six weeks. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) cautions patients not to lift anything heavier than six pounds (about 2.7 kg) for the first six weeks, and Michigan Medicine's abdominoplasty guide sets the limit at five pounds (about 2.3 kg) for the same period. A one-year-old weighs around 9 kg on the WHO child growth standards, so a toddler, a car seat and a full laundry basket are all off limits until your surgeon clears you. Below is the week-by-week plan for a parent of young children, from the first days in Istanbul to the first lift at home.

Before you fly: arrange childcare for six weeks, not six days

The most useful thing to book is not the hotel but the help at home. ASPS notes that every woman needs help with self-care and hygiene for the first few days after a tummy tuck, and a mommy makeover adds breast surgery and usually liposuction to that tummy tuck. Plan two layers: a companion who travels with you to Istanbul, and an adult at home who can lift, bathe and put your children to bed for six weeks. If your children are under three, that second person is essential, because almost every part of a toddler's day involves lifting.

Choose the travel window early. From Milano Malpensa, Milano Bergamo or Roma Fiumicino, a direct flight to Istanbul takes about three hours, so the journey is short; the stay is what you plan around. The Istanbul package starts at €5,520 with six package nights at the Deniz hotel, flights not included, and most patients stay longer, as our guide to flying home after a mommy makeover explains.

Days 1 to 10 in Istanbul: rest, walk, no children on your lap

The first days are spent between the partner hospital and the hotel. Michigan Medicine tells abdominoplasty patients to start walking as soon as possible, because walking reduces swelling and lowers the risk of blood clots, and to expect to walk slightly bent forward, returning to a normal posture over about three weeks. Drains, if used, come out when they produce less than 30 ml in 24 hours on two consecutive days, according to the same guide.

At this stage video calls with your children help more than visits. A child who climbs onto your lap or hugs you around the waist presses directly on the abdominal incision and on a fresh muscle repair. The UK Civil Aviation Authority advises against flying for 10 days after abdominal surgery, which is why day 10 is the earliest realistic date for the flight home, and only after the operating surgeon has checked you in person.

Weeks 2 to 3 at home: present, but hands off

Back home, you can read stories, help with homework and sit beside your children on the sofa, but not lift them. Michigan Medicine asks patients to wear the compression garment 24 hours a day for six weeks, and you will still be walking slightly bent. Teach older children a simple rule before you leave: no jumping on the bed, no climbing on Mum, hugs from the side. Toddlers can climb onto a chair or a step to reach you instead of being lifted.

Small changes at home save the most strain. Move nappies, clothes and snacks to waist height, use a changing mat on a table rather than the floor, and let your helper do bath time, because kneeling over a bath and lifting a wet child loads both the abdomen and the chest.

Week 4: driving, maybe, and the school run

Michigan Medicine advises not to drive until you have full range of motion in your arms, typically around four weeks after surgery. Driving is not the same as the school run: buckling a toddler into a car seat means leaning in, twisting and lifting, and that stays off limits until week six. If you drive at four weeks, let another adult lift the children in and out, or let older children buckle themselves.

Michigan Medicine puts return to work at six to eight weeks after an abdominoplasty, so a job with lifting, long hours on your feet or a full day alone with small children belongs in that window, and any earlier desk work is a question for your surgeon. The tummy tuck recovery timeline covers the abdominal part of healing in more detail.

Week 6: the first lift, with your surgeon's clearance

Six weeks is the end of the lifting limit in both the ASPS and the Michigan Medicine guidance, and the end of the compression period in the Michigan guide. It is a review point, not an automatic green light: ask your surgeon at the six-week follow-up, which can be done by video call, whether you can lift your child and how much. Start with lifts from a raised surface, keep the child close to your body, bend at the knees and avoid twisting.

Breast surgery adds its own limits. If your mommy makeover included a breast lift or augmentation, your surgeon may also restrict pushing, pulling and raising your arms above shoulder height, which matters for babies carried on the hip or lifted out of a cot. The mommy makeover package in Istanbul combines a tummy tuck with breast surgery and liposuction, so plan around the strictest of the three.

Weeks 8 to 12: back to running after them

Michigan Medicine restricts strenuous exercise for eight weeks, and the ASPS article says surgeons generally advise waiting 12 weeks before heavy workouts such as weightlifting, including abdominal exercises like planks. For a parent, that means playground chasing and carrying a sleeping child upstairs return gradually between weeks 8 and 12, while gym training and core work wait for week 12. The same ASPS article notes that the scar fades within a year.

Follow-up from home: who checks you after the flight

Because you recover at home with your children, plan the follow-up before you book. Ask your coordinator how the partner surgeon handles questions after you return, which photos to send and when, and what to do if a wound opens or one side swells more than the other; a local GP or emergency department treats urgent problems, and the surgeon who operated should receive the details. A free video call with our assistant, then a paid video call with the surgeon that is credited if you book, lets you ask these questions face to face. A six-week childcare checklist

Week 0: companion booked for Istanbul, home helper confirmed for six weeks, essentials moved to waist height. Days 1 to 10: walking several times a day, video calls with the children, the surgeon's check before the flight. Weeks 2 to 3: no lifting, side hugs only, the helper does baths and bedtime. Week 4: driving only with full arm movement and your surgeon's approval, no car-seat lifting. Week 6: follow-up, then the first supported lift. From week 12: heavy workouts, if your surgeon agrees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pick up my baby after a mommy makeover?

Not during the first six weeks. ASPS advises against lifting anything heavier than six pounds (about 2.7 kg) for the first six weeks after a mommy makeover, and even a newborn usually weighs more than that. Feed and cuddle your baby sitting down, with a helper placing the baby on a pillow on your lap away from the incision, and ask your surgeon at the six-week follow-up when lifting can start.

Should my children come with me to Istanbul for a mommy makeover?

Usually it is easier to leave them at home with a carer. For the first days you need help with your own self-care and hygiene, walks several times a day and plenty of rest, and a child who wants to be held makes all three harder. If your children do travel, bring a second adult whose only job is looking after them, so your companion can look after you.

Do I need a companion in Istanbul after a mommy makeover?

Yes, plan on one. ASPS notes that every woman needs help with self-care and hygiene for the first few days after a tummy tuck, and a mommy makeover adds breast surgery to it. A companion helps you get up, shower, walk and pack, and travels home with you once the operating surgeon has checked you, at day 10 at the earliest.

What should I do if a wound opens after I fly home?

Contact your coordinator and the partner surgeon the same day and send clear photos of the wound. If there is heavy bleeding, fever, spreading redness, or sudden pain or swelling in one leg, or you feel short of breath, go to a local emergency department first and ask them to share the findings with the surgeon who operated.

Can I lift my toddler at four weeks if I feel fine?

Feeling fine is not the same as being healed. Both ASPS and Michigan Medicine set the lifting limit for six weeks, because the abdominal muscle repair and the incision are still gaining strength underneath. At four weeks you may be able to drive if your arms move fully, but lifting a toddler into a car seat or out of a cot should wait for your surgeon's clearance at week six.
