Laser Eye Surgery Cost 2026: Turkey vs UK, US, Germany and Italy

The short answer

Laser eye surgery in Istanbul starts at €1,800 for both eyes, and that figure is an all-inclusive package: the surgeon's fee, the theatre, the pre-operative workup, the medication and your hotel nights. In the United States the national average is $4,492 for both eyes. In the United Kingdom most patients pay between £3,000 and £5,000. In Germany a Femto-LASIK runs €3,200 to €5,000, and in Italy the headline price at a national refractive group is €4,900. The gap is real, it runs from roughly €1,400 to €4,000, and the rest of this article is about where it comes from and where it is smaller than the marketing suggests.

What each country charges in 2026

United Kingdom

The high-street chains quote the lowest headline figures: standard LASIK from about £1,295 to £1,995 per eye at Optical Express, Optimax and Optegra, which is £2,590 to £3,990 for the pair. Premium platforms move sharply: Optegra lists SMILE at £2,595 per eye and PRESBYOND at £2,895, and the specialist London clinics sit between £2,950 and £3,750 per eye. Laser Eye Surgery Hub, which tracks eight UK providers, concludes that most people pay roughly £1,300 to £3,000 per eye, or £3,000 to £5,000 for both. At September 2026 rates that is about €3,500 to €5,800.

United States

The American Refractive Surgery Council puts the national average at $2,250 per eye and $4,492 for both, roughly €3,890. American pricing is unusually opaque: the advertised $999-per-eye offers almost always apply to low prescriptions on older platforms, and the quoted price climbs once astigmatism, a custom wavefront treatment or femtosecond flap creation enters the plan. Vision insurance discounts are common; full coverage is not, because refractive surgery is classified as elective.

Germany

German pricing is the most transparent of the four. The 2026 comparison published by Klinikkosten.de lists PRK and LASEK at €800 to €1,200 per eye, standard LASIK at €1,200 to €1,800, Femto-LASIK at €1,600 to €2,500 and SMILE at €2,200 to €2,800. For both eyes that is €3,200 to €5,000 for Femto-LASIK and €4,400 to €5,600 for SMILE. Statutory health insurance does not pay for it, some private policies contribute, and the cost is often deductible as an extraordinary expense.

Italy

Italy has the widest internal spread in this list. Gruppo Refrattivo Italiano publishes €4,900 for both eyes across SMILE, Femto-LASIK and PRK, dropping to €3,900 for patients under 35. Clinica Baviera, which operates in several Italian cities, is far cheaper: €1,395 per eye for Femtolasik, so €2,790 for the pair, and €1,130 per eye for PRK. Both include post-operative follow-up. If you are in Italy and price is the deciding factor, Baviera is the number to beat, not the €4,900.

Turkey: €1,800 for both eyes, and what is inside it

The Estetica Istanbul package for laser eye surgery starts at €1,800 and covers both eyes. It includes the full pre-operative assessment, the procedure itself under topical anaesthetic drops, the medication, the post-operative checks before you fly, and your hotel nights. Flights are never included, in this package or any other we publish. The deposit that holds a date is €500.

It is a day procedure. Treatment time is ten to fifteen minutes for both eyes, and most patients are functional within one to seven days, depending on whether the surgeon uses a flap technique or a surface ablation. Laser refractive surgery is low-risk but not risk-free: dry eye, night-vision halos and the need for an enhancement are the common issues, and a proportion of people are told at the workup that they should not have it at all.

Where the gap actually comes from

Three things, in order of size. First, the cost base: an Istanbul theatre hour, a nurse's salary and a hospital's rent are a fraction of what they are in London, Munich or Boston, while the laser platform itself, the same Zeiss, Alcon or Schwind machine, is bought on the same world market at the same price. Second, volume: Istanbul's high-volume ophthalmic units run far more refractive cases per laser per year than a mid-sized Western clinic, which spreads a seven-figure capital cost across many more patients. Third, marketing: the British and American chains spend heavily on customer acquisition, and that spend sits inside the per-eye price you are quoted.

What the gap is not is a difference in hardware. Ask any clinic, anywhere, which laser platform it uses and what year it was installed. A vague answer tells you more than the price does.

Where the gap is smaller than it looks

Two flights to Istanbul, for you and anyone travelling with you, are real money. Against a Clinica Baviera Femtolasik at €2,790 in Italy, a €990 difference will not survive two return fares and the time off work, and we will say so if you ask us. Against a €4,900 Italian package, a £4,000 British pair or the American average, it survives comfortably. The honest rule: laser eye surgery is worth travelling for when your home-market quote is above roughly €3,000 for both eyes, and marginal below that.

When laser is the wrong procedure

A corneal laser cannot fix everything. If your cornea is too thin, your prescription sits beyond the treatable range, or you are past roughly 45 with early lens changes, the surgeon will steer you to lens replacement instead, which starts at €3,500 in our packages and is a different operation with a different risk profile. Keratoconus, uncontrolled dry eye, a prescription that has shifted in the last twelve months and pregnancy are all reasons to be turned down, and a clinic that turns nobody down is not screening. Eyelid surgery, from €1,950, is sometimes confused with this: it changes how your eyes look, not how you see.

How to judge a quote, wherever you get it

Ask four questions. Which technique specifically, PRK, LASIK, Femto-LASIK or SMILE, and why that one for your cornea. What the enhancement policy is and for how long: a free retreatment within twelve months is common, ten years is a strong offer, and no policy at all is a flag. Who performs the surgery, and how many refractive cases they did last year. And what exactly is excluded from the number in front of you. Two quotes only become comparable once all four answers are on the table.
