After LASIK or SMILE, most patients see better by the next day, have their first check-up 24 to 48 hours after surgery and can fly home after 1 to 2 days. Swimming pools wait 1 to 4 weeks depending on the source (1 to 2 weeks per the ARSC, 2 to 4 per MedlinePlus), contact sports 2 to 4 weeks, and complete healing typically takes 3 to 6 months. Those milestones come from MedlinePlus, the patient library of the US National Library of Medicine, and the American Refractive Surgery Council (ARSC). Below is what each stage looks like when you travel to Istanbul for treatment, and which rules your eye surgeon may tighten for you.
Day 0: the first six hours
Both procedures are done under numbing eye drops, and each eye takes minutes. MedlinePlus says burning, itching or a gritty feeling usually settles within 6 hours, and advises keeping the eye closed as much as possible during that time. Vision is often blurry or hazy on the day itself. A clear shield is placed over the eye, most often overnight, so you cannot rub it in your sleep. Plan to go straight from the partner eye clinic to your hotel, with someone else holding the paperwork and the drops.

Do not rub your eyes at any point in the first weeks. After LASIK the corneal flap is still settling; after SMILE there is no flap, only a small keyhole incision, but rubbing can still disturb healing. If you are still deciding between the two techniques, our guide to LASIK vs SMILE in Istanbul compares how each one works and who suits which.
Days 1–2: the first check-up and the flight home
The first follow-up visit is usually 24 to 48 hours after surgery, according to MedlinePlus. The surgeon removes the shield, measures your vision and checks the cornea. Vision usually starts to improve by the next day. Most patients reach driving vision within 24 hours, the ARSC says, but only drive once your eye doctor clears you, and expect glare or halos at night for a few days.
The ARSC puts flying at 1 to 2 days after LASIK. Cabin air is dry, so keep lubricating drops in your hand luggage and use them during the flight. From Italy the trip is short: Milano Malpensa (MXP), Milano Bergamo (BGY) and Roma Fiumicino (FCO) all have direct flights to Istanbul (IST or Sabiha Gökçen, SAW) of about 3 hours. Book the return only after your surgeon confirms the check-up date. Our article on flying after laser eye surgery covers seat choice, drops and what to do if your eyes feel dry on board.
Days 1–3: showers, screens and back to work
You can shower and wash your hair after 24 hours, the ARSC says, but keep water, soap and shampoo out of your eyes for the first week. Most people return to work within 1 to 3 days. A desk job usually comes first; work with dust, chemicals or flying debris may need longer, which your surgeon decides. Screens are allowed, but blink often, take breaks and use artificial tears during long sessions.
Week 1: drops, make-up and light exercise
The first week is about drops and protection. Your surgeon prescribes the schedule, usually antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops plus lubricants; follow it exactly and keep the bottle tips clean. Light exercise such as walking can resume after 3 to 7 days and moderate exercise after about a week, according to the ARSC, as long as sweat stays out of your eyes.
Eye make-up is where sources differ. The ARSC allows it after 1 week with new products, while MedlinePlus advises avoiding eye make-up, lotions and creams for 2 to 4 weeks. When two sources disagree, follow your own surgeon's instruction; if none is given, the longer wait is the cautious choice.
Weeks 2–4: water, gym and contact sports
Swimming pools should usually wait 1 to 2 weeks, always with goggles, and hot tubs or natural water such as the sea or lakes about 2 weeks, according to the ARSC. MedlinePlus is stricter and lists 2 to 4 weeks for swimming and hot tubs; as with make-up, follow your surgeon, and if no instruction is given the longer wait is the cautious choice. Heavy lifting and intense workouts return after 1 to 2 weeks, built up gradually. Contact sports wait 2 to 4 weeks in both sources, the ARSC gives the same for water sports, and sports goggles are advised once you are cleared.
By this point most patients are back home. Your partner surgeon in Istanbul reviews the results by video, and an eye doctor near you can carry out any in-person check. Ask for your operation report and drop schedule in writing before you leave, so a local ophthalmologist can see exactly what was done.
Months 1–6: stabilising vision
Complete healing typically takes 3 to 6 months, the ARSC says. During that time vision can fluctuate slightly from day to day, and dryness or night halos usually fade gradually. Keep using lubricating drops as long as your eyes ask for them, and attend the follow-up appointments your surgeon schedules. Contact your surgeon at once if you notice pain that gets worse, a sudden drop in vision, or increasing redness or discharge; these are not part of normal recovery.
How long to stay in Istanbul
Because the first check-up falls 24 to 48 hours after surgery and flying is usually possible after 1 to 2 days, a short stay is enough for most patients. The exact number of nights depends on the clinic's assessment and your check-up date. Laser eye surgery packages in Istanbul start at €1,490 and include treatment at a partner eye clinic and hotel nights; flights are never included.
Estetica Istanbul is a medical-tourism agency, not a clinic. The treatment is carried out by partner eye surgeons at a licensed clinic, and we organise the consultation, hotel and transfers. Before booking you can have a free video call with your assistant, and after the offer a paid video call with the surgeon, which is credited if you book. Frequently Asked Questions
Is SMILE recovery faster than LASIK recovery?
The American Refractive Surgery Council describes the SMILE recovery experience as similar to LASIK, and gives no separate SMILE timeline. SMILE uses a small keyhole incision instead of a flap, but the practical rules for the first weeks are close: no eye rubbing, drops on schedule, a check-up within 24 to 48 hours, and a wait before swimming and contact sports. Your surgeon sets the exact schedule.
Can I travel alone after laser eye surgery in Istanbul?
You can travel home alone once your surgeon has cleared you at the first check-up, usually 24 to 48 hours after surgery. On the day of treatment itself, vision is often blurry and a shield covers the eye overnight, so you should not move around the city alone. Arrange the transfer from the clinic to your hotel in advance and keep your drops and documents within reach.
When can I wear contact lenses or glasses again after LASIK?
The aim of LASIK and SMILE is to stop needing distance glasses or contact lenses, so most patients do not go back to them. Some people still use reading glasses with age, or sunglasses outdoors to reduce glare. If your surgeon finds a remaining prescription during the 3 to 6 months of healing, they will advise whether glasses, lenses or a further treatment make sense.
What are the warning signs after laser eye surgery?
Mild burning, a gritty feeling and blurry vision on the first day are expected and usually settle within 6 hours, according to MedlinePlus. Contact your surgeon at once if pain gets worse instead of better, if your vision suddenly drops, or if redness or discharge increases. If you are already home, a local eye doctor can examine you, and your Istanbul surgeon can review the findings by video.
Can I sunbathe or go to the beach after LASIK?
Sun itself is not the main issue, but sea water and sand are. The American Refractive Surgery Council advises waiting about 2 weeks before natural bodies of water and 2 to 4 weeks before water sports, and MedlinePlus lists 2 to 4 weeks for swimming. Wear good sunglasses outdoors, keep sand and sunscreen away from your eyes, and plan a beach holiday for after your surgeon clears you.
