Limb lengthening is the only surgical way to add real height to an adult, and it is the most demanding procedure that comes up in lookmaxxing discussions. The honest summary: one stage gains 5–8 cm, costs from €40,100 at a partner orthopaedic team in Istanbul, keeps you in Türkiye for about three months, and takes 9–12 months before your legs feel normal for sport. A full two-stage plan takes about two years of your life.
This guide is for adult men who are seriously considering it. It covers what the surgery does, what it really costs per stage, how recovery runs month by month, and who should not do it at all.
What height surgery actually does
The surgeon cuts the bone in a controlled way (an osteotomy) and fixes it with a lengthening device, usually an internal nail. After a few days the two ends are drawn apart slowly, about one millimetre a day under the partner team's protocol, and new bone fills the gap. When the target length is reached, that new bone has to harden before you can walk normally on it.

Limb Lengthening Surgery
from€40,100US$46,520£34,490CA$64,560A$65,360NZ$79,400/stage
One stage means both thigh bones (femurs) or both lower-leg bones (tibias), never all four at once. The second stage is planned only after the first has healed. The full method, devices and inclusions are on our limb lengthening surgery page.
The real cost per stage
The published price is from €40,100 per stage. It covers the surgery, the hospital stay for as long as the surgeon decides, medication, aftercare and follow-up checks in Istanbul, a medical interpreter, and airport and hospital transfers. Each stage is priced separately with the same inclusions, so a two-stage plan means paying the per-stage price twice.
Two costs sit outside that package. The first is roughly three months of accommodation per stage, which is quoted separately on your written plan because it is a different booking from a one-week surgical trip. The second is flights, which are never included. Lost income matters too: the partner page lists desk work from about three months. If you want to see how the per-stage price compares with other countries, read our limb lengthening cost comparison for 2026.
Recovery month by month
Months 0–3 are the lengthening phase. You spend them in Istanbul with daily physiotherapy, regular X-rays and crutches or a walker. Physiotherapy every day is what keeps your knees, hips and ankles from stiffening while the muscles are being stretched.
From about month 3, consolidation begins: the new bone hardens, and the partner team's plan expects it to consolidate at about six to seven months per stage. The Paley Institute, a US limb-lengthening centre, reports that most patients return to full weight bearing one to two months after lengthening stops.
Months 7–12 are when consolidation finishes and strength returns. A 2020 systematic review in Bone & Joint Research (Marwan et al., 795 patients) found an average gain of 6.7 cm and an average consolidation index of 36.8 days per centimetre. At that average, a 7 cm stage needs about 258 days, roughly eight and a half months, of bone healing. So plan a 9–12-month recovery before running and contact sport, consistent with the review data and the partner team's plan, even though the Paley Institute notes that some hard-working patients return as early as six months.
Risks the forums leave out
Stretching bone also stretches muscles, nerves and blood vessels. The main risks are joint stiffness, muscle tightness, nerve irritation, pain during lengthening, infection, blood clots, and new bone that forms too slowly or too quickly. Long immobile periods and the flight home both raise clot risk, which is explained in our guide to blood clots and flying after surgery.
The same 2020 review counted, per patient, an average of 0.78 problems solved without surgery, 0.94 obstacles that needed another procedure, and 0.15 complications still present at the end of treatment. In plain words: expect at least one setback, and quite likely a further procedure, along the way. Low-risk is not the right word for this surgery.
Who should not do it
Do not consider it if your growth plates are still open or you are under 18, if you smoke and will not stop, or if you cannot commit to about three months away and months of daily physiotherapy. People with uncontrolled medical conditions, poor bone health or a history of blood clots need a specialist assessment first, and some will be told no.
Do not do it to fix confidence, dating or how you feel about yourself. Surgery changes leg length; it does not promise any of those things. If worries about your height or appearance take over your daily life, a doctor or psychologist is the right first step, before any surgeon.
Plan the practical side as seriously as the medical side. Most patients need someone with them for at least the first weeks, and our companion rules for travelling alone explain when that is required.
How to start, honestly
The surgeon needs full-length standing X-rays of both legs from hip to ankle, front and side views, plus your height, weight and medical history. The partner team reviews them and sends a written plan: which bones, how many centimetres, which device, how long you stay and the price of each stage. Nothing is booked until you have that plan in writing and have spoken to the surgeon on video.
Consultations are for adults aged 18 and over only. The first video call with your assistant is free, and you can stop at any point before paying a deposit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can limb lengthening add height after 25?
Yes. Age alone is not the limit once growth plates have closed, which happens in the late teens. What matters is bone health, general health, not smoking and being able to commit to months of daily physiotherapy. The partner orthopaedic team decides from full-length standing X-rays and your medical history, and some adults are advised against it.
Is internal nail lengthening visible afterwards?
An internal nail sits inside the bone, so nothing shows on the outside once you have healed. You keep small scars where the nail and screws were inserted, usually near the hip or knee and around the ankle for the tibias. The surgeon chooses between an internal nail and an external frame after reviewing your X-rays.
Do the nails have to be removed later?
Often yes. Many surgeons recommend removing the lengthening nail once the bone has fully consolidated, in a much smaller operation. Whether and when depends on the device and your X-rays. Ask the partner surgeon about removal timing and cost when you receive your written plan.
Will my body proportions look natural?
That depends on your starting proportions and the total gain, and the surgeon judges it from your X-rays. Each stage lengthens one bone in each leg, either both thigh bones or both lower-leg bones, so planning both stages lets the surgeon balance thigh and lower-leg length. Large total gains can change how the legs look against the torso, so agree the target before you book.
Can I work during the three months in Istanbul?
Plan as if you will not. The partner page lists desk work from about three months, which is roughly when the Istanbul stay ends. Before that, daily physiotherapy, regular X-ray checks, pain control and fatigue fill most of the day. Arrange leave or savings to cover the whole stay, and treat any remote work as a bonus rather than part of the budget.
